Brij Mandvi Palace

Palace in Mandvi. Sea, salt and sequins.

Why we picked it

Brij Mandvi Palace, perched on the crest of the Kutch coastline, trades the usual Gujarati heat for a bracing sea‑breeze that makes it tolerable from November to February; the monsoon‑slammed summers are a slog and the October‑November ferry schedule is a nightmare of cancellations. The heritage wing, with its Rajasthani‑inspired jharokhas and faded frescoes, feels more museum than hotel, so lodge in the newly refurbished beachfront annex where the air‑conditioning actually works and the private terrace looks out over the turquoise Gulf of Kutch. Breakfast is a surprisingly decent spread of poached eggs, masala chai and freshly baked naans from the in‑house bakery, but skip the “royal thali” offered at 2 p.m. – it’s a tourist‑catered parade of bland curries and over‑cooked dal. The real draw is the sunset at the adjacent promenade: claim a seat on the low‑rise wooden pier at 5.45 pm, order a glass of locally distilled mahua, and watch the sky bleed amber over the salt‑sprayed dunes; the view beats the over‑hyped Gujarat Marine National Park boat tours, which are cramped, overpriced, and spend most of the time squealing past mangrove mud. For a nightcap, head to the rooftop bar, but order the “sea‑foam cocktail” early; the last round is a watered‑down rum punch that belongs in a beachside shack. Two nights is honest if you want a day trip to Bhuj’s Kutch Museum and a lazy morning on Mandvi’s quiet beach; three lets you slip into a low‑key fishing‑village dinner at nearby Kothara, where the prawns are still caught that morning.
