Leela Mandvi Resort

Resort in Mandvi. Sea, salt and sequins.

Why we picked it

Mandvi, tucked between the Rann of Kutch and a restless Arabian sea, is frankly better suited to the sort of lazy luxury you can only find at the Leela Mandvi Resort, not to the pretentious beachfront condos that pepper Gujarat’s coastline. Arrive in late November or early February; the monsoon will flood the sandbars and the summer heat will make the sea an unpalatable scald. Book a sea‑view suite on the third floor – the balcony offers an unobstructed sweep of the sunrise over the Kutch shoreline, a view that the lower‑level rooms chews up with palm‑frond noise. The property’s “Mandvi Beach Club” is a decent spot for pre‑dawn chai, but the real draw is the private stretch of sand that’s only half‑finished; slip on the provided flip‑flops and you’ll have the beach essentially to yourself until the day‑trippers arrive around noon. Dine at the rooftop restauranteur, where the seafood thali is decent but the real treat is the Kashmiri paneer tikka, seasoned better than anything at the resort’s own kitchen. Skip the “cultural performances” after 9 pm – they’re a bland, tourist‑aimed cliche and the sound system will drown out the waves. A two‑night stay lets you soak in a sunrise, a sunset and the quiet after the evening crowd has fled; any longer feels indulgent rather than necessary. The resort’s proximity to the historic Mandvi fort makes a half‑day walk worthwhile, but the true draw remains the sea, the salt and the sequins of the hotel’s polished service, not the historical sites which are better explored from the modest guesthouses on the main road.
