Marriott Lucknow House

House in Lucknow. Old, layered, dust-and-gold.

Why we picked it

Marriott Lucknow House sits in a 19th‑century mansard on Bountyganj Road, the kind of colonial relic that once housed a Nawabi courtier and now smells faintly of polished brass and wilted lobby plants. The rooms are spacious enough to hide a suitcase and a stray dog, but the real charm is the marble‑tiled atrium where a bored pianist croons Hindi film standards at 10 am – a perfect excuse to linger over a saffron‑tinted chai before the city’s heat sets in. Book the Heritage Suite if you want the canopy‑bed, antique teak and a view of the sprawling saffron‑lime garden that the hotel pretends is a “private oasis”; otherwise the Deluxe King offers a decent bed and a work desk that actually stands still. Drop by the rooftop bar, The Courtyard, after sunset; the cityscape of Aminabad and the old Lucknow railway bridge lights up like a neon postcard, and the bartender’s beggar‑style kebab cocktail is surprisingly decent. Skipping the on‑site spa is advisable – it feels like a repurposed conference hall with cheap gauze wraps. The best time to visit is October to February, when the monsoon’s dampness hasn’t turned the atrium’s mosaics into a slip‑n‑slide. Two nights lets you sample the hotel’s “heritage walk” and still have time to sample street‑food kebabs on Tansen Marg, where the real Lucknow lives.
