Leela Kodaikanal Heritage

Heritage in Kodaikanal. Granite temples, palm fringes and filter coffee.

Why we picked it

Leela Kodaikanal is a heritage‑styled resort perched on the edge of the South Indian plateau, and the only reason you’ll ever set foot in Kodaikanal is to stay there. Arrive in early March or late October when the mist still clings to the pine‑lined hills but the rains have eased; June‑July is a soggy slog and the monsoon will drown the promised “granite temples” on the hotel grounds. The lobby, a high‑ceilinged affair of dark stone and colonial brass, is worth a five‑minute linger, but the real draw is the tea‑room on the third floor: a cobalt‑blue mahogany bar that serves filter coffee with a hint of cardamom, best sipped at 9 am while the fog rolls over the valley. Skip the “heritage walk” that drags you past the faux‑Gothic garden statues – they’re photo‑ops for Instagram tourists, not anything historically meaningful. Instead, book the sunrise buffet on the terrace at 6:15 am; the view over Kodai Lake is genuine, and the spread includes fresh mangoes and idiyappam, a rare nod to local cuisine amidst the otherwise Western brunch. Rooms facing the pine forest have a private balcony and a vintage copper bathtub – a small luxury in a place where most other hotels still use communal washrooms. For night‑owls, the bar’s “whisky and smoked apple” cocktail is decent, but the real after‑dark experience is the quiet walk along the 5 km Bryant Park trail; the hotel’s shuttle drops you at the gate, and the path is lit only by moonlight and the occasional lantern. Two nights is honest if you want to soak in the ambience; any longer feels like a holiday in a glorified colonial museum.
