Brij Allahabad Boutique

Boutique in Allahabad. Old, layered, dust-and-gold.

Why we picked it

Brij Allahabad is the kind of boutique that thrives on patina rather than polish – a three‑storey colonial house on Muir Road where dust‑laden chandeliers share space with brass-inlaid mahogany, and every cracked tile whispers a story of the 1930s elite. Book a room on the second floor if you want the balcony that looks out over the chaotic Katra Bazar and the river’s far‑off glint; the front‑facing suite on the ground floor is a nightmare at night when the street‑vendors’ clamor seeps through the cracked shutters. Arrive in late October, after the monsoon, when the humidity eases and the mango trees lining the garden burst into colour; December is tolerable but the cold seeping through the thin walls makes the ancient radiators groan. The in‑house restaurant, “The Golden Bungalow”, serves a remarkably decent aloo‑paratha with ghee that rivals any dhaba, but skip the paneer tikka – it’s an over‑cooked, filler‑grade affair. Breakfast is best taken on the verandah at sunrise, when the call to prayer mingles with the faint incense from the nearby Kedar Ghat, and you can watch the city stir without being swallowed by it. The hotel’s location puts you a ten‑minute rickshaw ride from the Sangam and a fifteen‑minute walk to Anand Bhawan, so you can hit the heritage sites without the tourist‑swarm of the railway station. Two nights are honest; a third lets you soak in the slow‑morning river cruise without feeling rushed. Do not visit in May or June – the heat drives the air‑conditioning to its limit and the old plaster peels faster than you can enjoy it.
