ITC Agra Resort

Resort in Agra. Old, layered, dust-and-gold.

Why we picked it

ITC Agra Resort sits on the banks of the Yamuna, a sprawling colonial‑era hideaway that feels more like a faded postcard than a modern city hotel. The rooms are large enough to hide a suitcase and a suitcase‑full of expectations; the marble‑topped bathrooms are genuine, but the air‑conditioner hums louder than the Taj’s trumpets, so bring earplugs if you plan to linger after sunset. The property’s biggest draw is the infinity pool that overlooks the marble tower of the Taj Mahal at dusk – a perfect spot for an early‑evening whisky, though the bar’s cocktail menu leans heavily on generic “Maharaja” flavours; skip the overpriced mango martini and ask for a straight gin tonic with a slice of lemon. Dining is split between the all‑day café, where the aloo paratha is passable, and the night restaurant, where the tandoori kebabs are decent but the service sputters when the lobby fills with wedding parties. Stay the night before a Taj sunrise for the best light and a quieter pool, but avoid the monsoon months of July‑August – the gardens turn into a muddy tangle and the promised “dust‑and‑gold” charm becomes literal. Two nights lets you enjoy the spa’s Ayurvedic massage without the rush; any longer feels indulgent rather than essential.
