Patnem

Sea, salt and sequins. Portuguese churches, art-deco, and a kitchen that runs late.

Curator's note

Patnem, the sleepy sibling of Benaulim, stretches just shy of three kilometres of golden sand and a tide‑pooled lagoon that’s more suited to a lazy brunch than a surf‑session; arrive in early October when the monsoon has drained the sand and the crowds are still thinning, and you’ll find the beachside shacks still carrying the lingering humidity of the rains. The only truly local bite is the crab xacuti at Martin’s Kitchen on the cliff‑edge road – order it with a feni‑infused lime soda at sunset and you’ll taste the Portuguese legacy without the tourist‑price tag. Skip the early‑morning yoga crowds on the main stretch and wander to the north‑east cove where a rust‑red fishing boat is moored; the view of the anchored vessel against the pink‑tinged horizon is worth the extra walk. For a splash of heritage, pop into the 16th‑century St. Anthony’s Chapel hidden behind the palm‑lined lane off Patnem Beach Road; it’s rarely on the itinerary but offers a quiet moment and a chance to glimpse the faded azulejo tiles that survive the salt air. Stay at the modest but immaculate Villa Surya near the lagoon – it’s a stone’s throw from the beach, has a private garden, and the owners will gladly recommend a night‑market in nearby Colva that actually serves fresh fish, not processed snacks. Two days here feels honest; a third allows a sunrise paddle‑board on the backwater of the Sal River, which, unlike the flashy parties of Calangute, feels genuinely Goan. Avoid December’s high‑season price surge unless you’re prepared to pay premium for a beachside chair that barely shields you from the sun.
