Curator's note

Bhubaneswar, the “Temple City” of Odisha, is best approached as a staggered pilgrimage rather than a weekend sprint; three days is the honest minimum if you want more than a photo‑op at Lingaraja. Begin at the sun‑bleached Lingaraja Temple on Mukteswar Temple Lane before the crowds swell, then walk the Old Town’s narrow arteries to the 7th‑century Mukteshwar and the claw‑like rock‑cut Tarini; the latter’s silence is a rare commodity and worth the early‑morning trek. Skip the glossy, rubber‑stamp museum at the Odisha State Museum unless you have a scholarly bent – the real depth lies in the open‑air Khandagiri‑Udayagiri caves, where Jain ascetics carved themselves into the limestone and the view of the city spreads like a broken mandala. For food, drop into the bustling Khandagiri market at noon for a plate of dalma with fresh roti, then chase down a steaming bowl of rasgulla at the unpretentious Hawa Mahal sweet shop on Bindusagar Road. Stay in the modest guesthouses of the BJB Nagar district; they sit close to the IT hub, saving commute time if you must juggle meetings with temple‑hopping. November to February are the only tolerable months – the monsoon turns the streets into a slick, mosquito‑laden swamp and the summer scorch makes stone worship an ordeal. If you’re crunched for time, ditch the Konark day‑trip; the Sun Temple’s grandeur is better savoured with a night‑stay and a guided sunrise rather than a rushed bus ride from Bhubaneswar.
